How to use it

  1. Choose the paper and orientation.
  2. Set the number of staves, the distance between lines and the margin.
  3. Switch the bar lines at the ends on or off, then download or print.

How it works

The area inside the margins is divided into equal bands, one per staff. In each band a five-line staff, 4 times the line distance tall, is centred. A staff needs at least 6 line distances of band, otherwise the tool reports that there is no room.

Example

A4 portrait, 10 staves, 12 mm margin, 2 mm spacing: the usable height is 273 mm, each band is 27.3 mm and each staff is 8 mm tall, leaving 19.3 mm between staves.

Tips

  • Fewer staves with a larger spacing suit children and beginners.
  • Print at actual size so the spacing stays what you set.

Frequently asked questions

How many staves per page should I choose?

About 10 on A4 or Letter portrait is common for handwritten music, 6 to 8 leaves more room for lyrics or notes, and landscape fits fewer. The tool tells you when the staves do not fit.

What line spacing is usual?

About 1.75 to 2.5 mm between lines is typical for handwriting, giving a staff 7 to 10 mm tall. The default here is 2 mm, so a staff is 8 mm tall.

Does the page include clefs?

No. The staves are blank so that you can draw any clef, key and time signature yourself.

Can I print it in landscape?

Yes. Choose landscape; the staves become longer and fewer fit, so lower the number if the tool reports no room.
