Split PDF by Size

Set the largest file size you can send, open the PDF and get consecutive parts that each fit under it. Your document stays in your browser.

Everything happens in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop a PDF.
  2. Type the largest size a part may have, in MB.
  3. Press Split by size, then download the parts one by one or all at once.

How it works

The tool starts with the first page and tries longer and longer page ranges. Each try is saved as a real PDF and its byte size is compared with your limit, then a search narrows down the longest range that still fits. The next part starts on the following page. Parts are named name-part-01.pdf, name-part-02.pdf and so on.

Example

A 12 MB report with a 5 MB limit may come out as three files of about 4.8, 4.9 and 2.3 MB. A file that is already under the limit is returned as a single part.

Tips

  • Leave a little room under a mail limit: attachments grow by about a third when email encodes them.
  • A part can only be as small as its biggest page. Compress scanned images first if single pages are heavy.

Frequently asked questions

How are the parts chosen?

Pages stay in order. The tool builds a candidate file, saves it, checks its real size and keeps adding pages until the next page would push it over the limit. Each part is therefore as long as possible.

What if one page is larger than my limit?

That page cannot be made smaller by splitting, so it becomes a part of its own and is marked as over the limit. To shrink it you need to compress the images in the PDF.

Why is the total of the parts bigger than the original?

Each part must carry its own copy of shared items such as fonts and images used on several pages, so the parts add up to more than the source file.

Do I get one archive?

No. This tool has no zip step: use Download all, which saves the parts one after another, or download each part yourself. Your browser may ask to allow multiple downloads.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF is read and cut in your browser. Password-protected files cannot be processed, and each file can be up to 100 MB.
