PDF Attachment Extractor

Some PDFs carry other files inside them, such as spreadsheets, images or source documents. Choose a PDF to see them listed with their sizes and download any of them.

Everything happens in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop a PDF.
  2. Look at the list of attached files.
  3. Press Download next to a file, or Download all.

How it works

The tool reads the EmbeddedFiles name tree in the document catalogue and the file-attachment annotations on each page with pdf-lib. The stored file data is decompressed in your browser and handed to you as a download.

Example

An invoice PDF with an embedded XML invoice and a CSV shows two rows: invoice.xml and data.csv, both attached to the document, with their sizes.

Tips

  • Open files from unknown PDFs with care, as you would any attachment.
  • Zero results usually mean the PDF simply has none.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as an attachment?

Files stored in the PDF's list of embedded files, which most readers show in an attachments panel, and files attached to a spot on a page as a paperclip or pushpin note. Page images and fonts are not attachments; use the image extractor for pictures.

Are the files changed?

No. Each file is saved with exactly the bytes stored in the PDF, under its stored name. Unsafe characters in a name are replaced and repeated names get a number.

Why does downloading all give several downloads?

The browser saves the files one after another. It may ask once to allow multiple downloads.

What about a PDF portfolio?

The files of a portfolio are embedded files too, so they are listed here. The portfolio layout itself is ignored.

Does it work with password-protected files?

No. Remove the password first.
