PDF Bookmark Editor
The existing bookmarks of your PDF appear as a list, one per line as Title | page. Change the text, indent lines to nest them, and save a copy with the new outline.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Choose or drop a PDF. Its bookmarks, if any, are loaded into the list.
- Edit the text: change titles or pages, delete lines, add lines, indent for sub-items.
- Press Save and download. The file is named
name-bookmarks.pdf.
How it works
The outline is read from the document catalog and written back as a new tree whose items each jump to the top of a page (fit page view). Parents are shown opened. The page content is not touched.
Example
Part I | 1
Chapter 1 | 2
Chapter 2 | 9
Part II | 20
gives two top-level bookmarks, the first with two children.
Tips
- Use the page numbers shown by your reader, counting from 1 with the cover as page 1.
- Saving an empty list removes all bookmarks from the copy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a sub-bookmark?
Indent the line with two spaces under its parent. A line can be at most one level deeper than the line above. Tabs count as two spaces.
Can titles contain the | character?
Yes. The page number is whatever follows the last | on the line, so earlier bars stay part of the title.
Do titles in other alphabets work?
Yes. Bookmark titles are stored as Unicode text, so Cyrillic, Greek or Chinese titles are fine, unlike text drawn onto pages.
What happens to bookmarks that go to a named destination?
Some PDFs point bookmarks at named destinations. This tool cannot resolve those, lists them with page 1 and says how many there are. Check the pages before saving, because saving rewrites every bookmark to point to a page.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Password-protected files cannot be opened, and each file can be up to 100 MB.
