Lined paper generator

Pick a ruling, set the top space and margins, add the red margin line if you like, and download a PDF for A4 or Letter. The three standard rulings are wide, college and narrow. Everything is made in your browser.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Choose A4 or Letter and the orientation.
  2. Pick wide, college, narrow or custom ruling.
  3. Set the space above the first line and the margins; switch the margin line on or off.
  4. Download the PDF or print the preview.

How it works

The first line sits one spacing below the top space, and further lines follow at the same distance until the bottom margin. Spacing is stored in points (1/72 in): wide ruling is 24.75 pt, college 20.25 pt and narrow 18 pt.

Example

Letter portrait, college ruling, 0.75 in top space and 0.5 in margin: lines start at 0.75 + 0.28125 in from the top and repeat every 0.28125 in down to 10.5 in, which gives 34 lines.

Tips

  • Print at actual size so the ruling really is the spacing you chose.
  • Narrow ruling suits small handwriting; wide ruling suits children and large writing.

Frequently asked questions

What are wide, college and narrow ruling?

They are the common US spacings between lines: wide (legal) ruling is 11/32 in (8.7 mm), college ruling is 9/32 in (7.1 mm) and narrow ruling is 1/4 in (6.35 mm). Other makers vary slightly, so treat them as typical values.

Can I have my own spacing?

Yes. Choose Custom spacing and enter a distance between 3 and 30 mm (or the same in inches).

Where does the margin line go?

It is a vertical red line at the distance you set from the left edge, drawn over the full page height. Notebook paper often has it near 1.25 in (32 mm), which is the default here.

Why are there no lines near the bottom edge?

Lines are drawn only inside the bottom margin you set, so the last line stops before it.
