How to use it

  1. Choose or drop a PDF.
  2. Pick the sheet: twice the page width keeps pages at full size, A4 or Letter landscape fits them to that paper.
  3. Press Make booklet and download, then print double-sided.

How it works

The page count is padded to a multiple of 4. Sheet number i (counting from the outside, from 0) has the last-but-2i page and page 2i+1 on its front, and pages 2i+2 and last-but-(2i+1) on its back. The tool places each page in the left or right half of a landscape sheet with pdf-lib. It uses the same page order as the Booklet Page Calculator, which only lists the order.

Example

A 6-page file is padded to 8. The result has four sides: 8 (blank) and 1, 2 and 7 (blank), 6 and 3, then 4 and 5. After printing, the first sheet shows page 1 on the cover and a blank back cover.

Tips

  • Use a page count that is a multiple of 4 to avoid blank pages.
  • Test with a few sheets of scrap paper first, because printers differ in how they flip.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages does a booklet need?

Pages are printed four to a sheet of paper, so the page count is rounded up to a multiple of 4. The extra pages are left blank and placed at the end of the booklet. A 10-page file becomes 12 pages, with 2 blank ones.

In what order are the pages arranged?

For 8 pages the printed sides are 8 and 1, 2 and 7, 6 and 3, then 4 and 5. The outer sheet carries the last and first pages, and each inner sheet carries the next pair. Folded and nested, the pages read in order.

How do I print it?

Print all pages double-sided, flipping on the short edge, and choose actual size or 100% so the halves are not scaled again. Most printers label this option as flip on short edge, or as a landscape booklet setting.

What happens to pages of different sizes?

Each page is fitted into its half of the sheet and centred, keeping its proportions. With the no-scaling option the halves are as big as the largest page.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The pages are rearranged in your browser and the new PDF is saved from there.
