Isometric paper generator

Isometric paper helps with drawing 3D shapes such as cubes and boxes. Set the triangle side and margins, choose lines or dots, and download a PDF for A4 or Letter. It is made in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose the paper, orientation and units.
  2. Enter the triangle side and the margin; pick lines or dots.
  3. Download the PDF or print the preview.

How it works

Vertical lines are placed √3/2 × side apart. Two families of lines at +30° and −30° pass through the corners where the vertical lines meet, and every line is cut off at the margin box. The dot style puts a dot on each corner, with every second column shifted by half a side.

Example

A 10 mm side gives vertical lines every 8.66 mm and corners 10 mm apart on each vertical line. Within 190 mm of width that fits 21 columns.

Tips

  • A side of 5 mm to 10 mm suits most sketches.
  • Print at actual size so that the angles and sizes stay correct.

Frequently asked questions

What is isometric paper?

It is a grid of equilateral triangles. Lines run vertically and at 30 degrees above and below the horizontal, which is how the three axes of an isometric drawing look.

How wide are the vertical lines apart?

By √3/2 times the triangle side, about 0.866 of it. A 10 mm triangle gives vertical lines 8.66 mm apart.

What is the dot version for?

Dots mark only the corners of the triangles. It is lighter on the page and common for sketching; the dots still line up on the same isometric axes.

Why does the grid stop short of the right margin?

Only whole vertical columns are drawn, so the grid ends at the last full column that fits.
