Add Header and Footer to PDF

Type text for the top and bottom, left, center or right. Insert [page], [pages], [date] and [name] where you need them. A numbered copy is created in your browser.

Everything happens in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop a PDF.
  2. Type text into any of the six boxes. The footer centre starts with [page] / [pages].
  3. Set size and distance from the edge, then press Add and download. The file is named name-header-footer.pdf.

How it works

For each page the tokens are replaced, the text is measured with Helvetica and placed in the corner or centre of its edge inside your margin, then drawn in black on top of the page with pdf-lib. The font size can be 4 to 72 pt and the margin 0 to 200 pt (72 pt is one inch).

Example

Header left [name], header right [date] and footer centre Page [page] of [pages] on report.pdf with 12 pages: page 3 gets “report” top left, the date top right and “Page 3 of 12” at the bottom.

Tips

  • Keep the margin at 20 pt or more so printers do not cut text off.
  • Merge files first, then add the footer, so the page count covers the whole document.

Frequently asked questions

Which tokens can I use?

[page] is the page number, [pages] the total number of pages, [date] today in year-month-day form taken from your device clock, and [name] the file name without .pdf. Anything else is printed as typed.

Why can I not type Cyrillic or Chinese?

The tool uses Helvetica, one of the standard PDF fonts, which has Latin letters only. It names the first character it cannot draw instead of producing wrong text.

How is this different from the page numbers tool?

Page numbers adds one number in one place. This tool fills up to six positions with text, a date and the file name, and the page number is one of the tokens.

Will it work on rotated pages?

Yes. Positions are placed as the page looks in a viewer, so the header is at the visual top of a page that is stored sideways.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It is processed in your browser. Password-protected files cannot be opened, and each file can be up to 100 MB.
